The color of the betel leaves defines the pungency of the leaves. Pungency is more in dark color leaves. Significantly, pungency is less when the color faded to light green. Mostly, moderate pungency leaves are considered for chewing due to its pungent nature. Ttre shelf life of the Sholavandan betel was increased by traditional packaging practices. The betel leaves are arranging like a half-curved bunch which is called as “Kavuli”. Those bunches are arranged in cylindrical shape and packed. Hollow or compact packing of betel leaves in banana stem fiber is followed to minimize the spoilage in storage. This type of arrangements and packing tSpes are the reasons to increased shelf life of the betel vine
