Pattamadai Pai (mat)
Pattamadai, a village in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli district, is renowned for its unique tradition of mat weaving.
The mats are crafted from Korai grass, which grows along the banks of the Tamiraparani River.
These mats exhibit exceptional fineness, with wrap threads ranging from 80 to 140 counts per nine inches of total warp width.
The higher the count, the finer the mat.
The fully grown Korai grass is cut, soaked in water from the Tamiraparani
River, and then split into fine strands.
Skilled weavers transform these strands into supple and lustrous mats, often
referred to as “pattu pai” or silk mats due to their exquisite quality.
